Vital Equipment for Post-Solar Usage Analysis

We just had solar panels installed on our house, which opened our eyes to our electricity usage. We saw our total usage, but had no way to understand where/how/why we were using so much energy. Trying a few smart plugs here and there didn't help the overall understanding of our electricity usage patterns, so we purchased and installed the Emporia Vue 3.

This opened our eyes to how much stand-by electricity we were wasting, and after purchasing more Emporia smart plugs, we set things up to reduce that. Things like the TV+speakers are automatically disconnected from power when we typically don't use them (1am-9am), thus reducing their stand-by wastage. We feel we've saved about 25% of our overall electricity usage this way.

The only criticism I have is that we can only monitor 16 of our 37 circuits at one time. Providing an expansion module would be a cost-effective solution, but I understand I can purchase a second unit at full price, and pair them together. We may end up doing this.

Great Product.

Great Product. Was able to get it installed in my full 28 slot panel and able to cover the majority of the circuits. It did get a little tight with all the CT wires plus I have a Generator panel that feeds wires but it works.

How the Vue works

Step 1

The Emporia Vue 3 is installed directly into your home's electrical panel, providing detailed monitoring of your energy consumption.

Monitor your overall home usage with the Whole Home model or you can monitor specific rooms or appliances with the addition of up to 16 sensors.

By adding these circuit level sensors you can identify energy hogs, see any unusual activity like a sump pump that is constantly running or even be notified if you left the oven on.

If you have more than 16 breakers you want to monitor, just add another Vue Home Energy Monitor in the same panel and manage it all in our convenient, free app.

The base Vue 3 model will track your systems main lines giving you a Total Usage (or Net) value seeing how much energy your home is using. 

No additional 50A CT sensors are included in this kit to track individual circuit usage, but it provides the functionality needed to track your overall usage and leverage energy management features from the Emporia platform.

This package provides you with 8x 50A CT sensors to track individual circuits within your electrical panel as well as your system mains. 

The additional 50A CTs are helpful to track suspect circuit usage, high appliance loads and circuits of interest. This package is helpful if you're not concerned about every circuit within your panel, but focused on a select few branch circuits usage. Also helpful to monitor solar generation if present.

This package provides the most complete measurement coverage available with a single Vue energy monitor. 

It allows for up to 16x branch circuits to be monitored from the same panel that your Vue energy monitor is installed in. Use these sensors to track your solar generation, high appliance load or any circuits of interest.

Easy to configure

In the back of your mind you worry about purchasing a product that is not completely configured for the product you are using it on. In my case the level 2 Emporia charger on the Chevrolet Equinox EV. I worried for nothing. After the electrician hard wired Emporia level 2 charger and flipped the breaker the lights came on. 

Using the Emporia app on my smart phone the charge and phone paired using Bluetooth and the charger prompted me to connect to my homes wireless Wi-Fi. I then configured the car to accept the level 2 charging. I plugged the charger into the car and within 10 seconds the car was charging. The level e 11 kw charging adds about 32 miles of range an hour. 

The reason I bought this charger was based on several you tube videos doing comparison tests. It is mid priced for chargers and there were no bad comments.

Great value!

The Level 2 (220vac) charger is much quicker than using a standard 120vac outlet. Not only is it quicker, but you can connect it to your wifi and program it for off-peak hour charging. We plug our Ionic 5 in after parking it in the garage and the unit delays charging until the programed time. You can also change the charging current if you have an existing outlet that's on a lower current breaker. You can find cheaper chargers, but they are charging with less current. That means longer charging times. I think the Emporia is the sweet-spot for value (price vs. features).

We went with the plug-in version. We had to have an electrician install a new circuit breaker and outlet to connect it. That cost an extra $150 to have the plug installed. The up side is we can unplug the unit and take it with us if we move.

The exact charger we needed

We were researching chargers and found this one had the most features for the money and charge rate. What we didn’t expect is that we had the option to either hard wire or install a plug. We opted for the hard wire. After using it for a couple months we are able to see our usage rate and they estimate your electrical cost based on where you live and who your electric company is.

Our car gives us the ability to control charge percentage and whatnot, but so does this charger. I am extremely happy with this purchase and would do it again.

Very satisfied

 

I purchased this device because it was Energy Star Certified and eligible for PSEG rebates. First, the two (minor) negatives. The cable is a little bulkier than most but it's not unmanagable. Also, the nozzle faces upwards when placed on the charger. Although it does have a cap, if you install it outdoors, it may become susceptable to water damage. 

 

Mine is installed in the garage so it's really not an issue. While I had an electrician install the unit, the actual programming and setup was extremely user friendly. The software is more than acceptable. 

 

I had one issue where the charging would begin immediately after plugging it in (instead of waiting for my programmed start time). I called customer service and my call was answered immediately by a helpful representative (I'm sorry I forgot her name, despite me asking twice, but it began with a "T"). She immediately found my account, upgraded my firmware and instructed me on what I needed to do. As I suspected, the Unit/Software was not defective. I was! 

 

She could have not been more pleasant, accomodating and patient. For those who are interested, you must leave the app in the Pause mode and you need to program and Start AND Stop time. That solved the problem.

HIGHLY Recommend!

 

I 100% recommend this charger! My electrician initially hardwired it using a 50 amp breaker. When he swapped that out the next day with 60 amps, it took just a tap on the app to change the breaker. Setting it up on bluetooth and wifi was a breeze. The hardest part was probably remembering my password. 

 

I love that the app shows not only how long it took to charge (roughly 3.5 hours for my RAV4 Prime) but also the cost per charge. The app is pretty intuitive and the unit itself looks nice and streamlined. At this price point and with all the features that I need, plus my utility company's rebate programs, this purchase is a no-brainer. 

 

To top it off, their customer support is outstanding! Buy this charger, you won't regret it.
