Hardwire vs. NEMA Plug
- Hardwire: A Hardwired installation is a more permanent EV charging solution. While not portable like a NEMA plug model, you can charge at up to 48A. It is recommended to hire a licensed electrician to install a hardwired Emporia Classic EV Charger.
- NEMA Plug: If you have a NEMA 14-50 outlet where you plan to install the charger, this might be the option for you. A NEMA Plug is easy to install and portable, but limits your charge rate to 40A. If your electrical panel has GFCI breakers, we recommend the hardwired option.
- Important NEMA outlet requirements: Not all NEMA 14-50 outlets are rated for EV charging. Per NEC continuous load requirements, your outlet must be industrial-grade, 50A rated, and continuous-duty rated (Hubbell, Leviton, Bryant, or Cooper (Eaton) are recommended brands). A standard residential outlet is not designed for the sustained load of nightly EV charging. See the GFCI Breakers tab for additional electrical considerations.
J1772 or NACS Connector
The Emporia Classic EV Charger comes in one of two connector types to support all EVs:
J1772 / CCS: The standard connector for most electric vehicles in North America. This connector is used for Level 1 (120 volt) and Level 2 (240 volt) AC charging.
NACS (North American Charging Standard) Connector: The NACS connector is becoming the new standard in North America. Also referred to as SAE J3400, it is compatible with both AC Level 2 and DC fast charging. Tesla vehicles use the NACS connector, and many other manufacturers are transitioning to this standard starting in 2025.
GFCI Breakers
- The Nuisance of NEMA 14-50 and GFCI Breakers:
- GFCIs normally add a layer of protection for users. However, they can also lead to nuisance tripping when used in conjunction with a GFCI protected appliance, like a Level 2 charger, that will shut down the associated circuit and halt charging on your vehicle. This will cause headaches for homeowners who will have to continually reset the tripped breakers.
- Emporia's EV chargers have their own built-in GFCI protection, which could cause nuisance tripping if the circuit is also protected by a GFCI breaker at the panel.
- NEMA outlet quality matters: EV charging draws near-maximum current for hours at a time. This is a fundamentally different demand than the dryers and ranges most NEMA 14-50 outlets were designed for. For safe, reliable operation, use only an industrial-grade, 50A continuous-duty rated receptacle from a trusted manufacturer (Hubbell, Leviton, Bryant, or Cooper (Eaton)). Per NEC requirements, a 50A receptacle and dedicated non-GFCI breaker are required to support 40A continuous charging. Professional installation by a licensed electrician is strongly recommended.

PowerSmart is a software upgrade that unlocks the full power of the Emporia Pro EV Charger when paired with the Vue Energy Monitor installed in your electrical panel.
Here's how it works: PowerSmart uses real-time energy from the Vue Energy Monitor device in your electrical panel and measures your energy use thousands of times per second and allocates only the available panel capacity to your EV charger to never exceed the maximum panel capacity. The Vue comes in the box with the Emporia Pro EV Charger, and can be installed by your electrician at the same time as your charger install.

NEMA Plugs and GFCI Protection
- NEMA Outlet Requirements: If you are using the plug-in (NEMA 14-50) configuration, your outlet must be industrial-grade and rated for continuous duty at 50A. Recommended brands: Hubbell, Leviton, Bryant, or Cooper (Eaton). A standard residential-grade outlet is not suitable for daily EV charging. Professional installation by a licensed electrician is strongly recommended.
- The National Electrical Code (NEC) now requires a GFCI breaker installed on any circuit using a 6-50 or 14-50 outlet. Since the Emporia EV Charger already has built-in GFCI protections, it can cause false/unwarranted tripping when installed on a line with GFCI protections also provided on the breaker.
- Your electrician will be able to provide the best information for your installation scenario. If GFCI breaker installation is a requirement for your installation, then we recommend using the hardwired installation method since that is not required to be GFCI protected in the same way the NEMA outlet is. Due to conflicting requirements between NEC (NFPA70) and UL certifications related to the behavior of GFCI operations on EV Charging equipment, we can't provide more specific installation recommendations since it will depend on your location and you should consult your professional installer for details.
